Aftermath online slot game
NetEnt put out Aftermath in September 2026 and it feels like the old NetEnt is back. This online slot throws you into a post-apocalyptic world where office workers wearing colanders on their heads swing golf clubs at a rogue AI. The game runs on Scatter Pays, avalanches and an expanding grid loaded with modifiers. If you've played Nolimit City's Tanked 3: First Blood 2, you'll be able to clearly spot the similarities.

Aftermath Theme and First Impressions

A reggae-style vocal track hits you as soon as you start spinning the reels, with a great groove that softens into an instrumental when the lyrics stop. The junkyard wasteland looks solid, but it was the goofy characters that sold it for us. Aftermath is a brand-new IP, and NetEnt had to build its identity from scratch. This whole "office rebellion against a mad AI" theme nails it.

How Aftermath Plays β Base Game
You start on a 4x6 grid without regular paylines. Instead, it's a Scatter Pays slot, so you need 8 or more matching symbols scattered anywhere to score.
Every win sets off an avalanche. There's winning symbols that blow up, new ones drop in, and you can chain wins on a single spin. Each consecutive win bumps a global multiplier up by +1 and it keeps climbing until the chain breaks. Then it resets to zero.
Here's the paytable at 1 EUR per spin:
| Symbol | 8+ Symbols | 12+ Symbols | 16+ Symbols |

Bonus Features
Waiting for the main bonus, the screen is packed with modifiers that pop up often enough to keep things moving. You won't be sitting there bleeding money.
Wild Symbols
There are two kinds of this symbol:
- Normal: Only shows up in the base game and replaces other symbols.

- Special: Only shows up in free spins and it carries its own multiplier. When it's part of a win, that multiplier gets added to the global multiplier for each winning connection.

In Bonus Spins, Special Wilds are always worth +2. In Super Bonus Spins, you get one guaranteed every spin with a random value between +3 and +10.
Bomb, Upgrade, Change and Purge
This online slot has four modifier types:
- Bomb: Blows up adjacent symbols and doubles the current multiplier.

- Upgrade: Picks itself plus several low-paying symbols and turns them all into the highest or second-highest paying symbol currently on the grid.

- Change: Scans the 8 surrounding symbols, picks one at random and transforms itself and all its neighbors into that symbol.

- Purge: Blasts a chunk of the blocked wall away, removes all low and medium-paying symbols from the board and triggers a fresh avalanche with only high-value symbols.

We liked Bomb and Purge the most, as they opened up the grid and gave us more chances to win. Upgrade was kind of a letdown because it rarely delivered anything worth writing home about.
Expanding Reels

You begin on a 4x6 grid, but Bomb and Purge can smash blocked positions and expand the grid all the way to 6x8. In the base game, the grid resets after each spin. During bonus rounds, any unlocked positions stay open for the whole feature.
Bonus Spins

Land 3, 4, or 5 Scatters and you get 8, 10, or 12 free spins. In Bonus Spins, the global multiplier doesn't reset between spins, but modifiers don't show up.
Each extra Scatter during the feature adds 3 more spins. If a Super Scatter lands, it also adds 3 spins and upgrades you to Super Bonus Spins.
In our 200-spin test, we hit this bonus twice pretty close together. That's probably just the medium volatility doing its thing.
Super Bonus Spins

To directly trigger this, you need 3 Scatters, with one of them being a Super Scatter. That gets you 12 special spins.
Same as the regular bonus (multiplier doesn't reset between spins), but now modifiers are active. Plus you're guaranteed a Special Wild worth +3 to +10 on every single spin.
We never triggered this naturally, so we bought it for 500x our stake and paid 277.20x. That's one purchase, so don't read too much into it.
Elevate Feature (Bonus Buy)
If you're of the impatient kind, the Elevate menu has you covered:
- Scatter Hunt (5x the bet): 7x better odds of triggering a free spins bonus.

- Feature Hunt (10x the bet): Guarantees at least 1 special modifier on the spin.

- Power Boost (25x the bet): Starts the spin with a random multiplier between x5 and x10.

- Bonus Spins (100x the bet): Guarantees 3 Scatters for the regular free spins.

- Aftermath Spins (500x the bet): Guarantees 3 Scatters (one Super) for direct entry into Super Bonus Spins.

We're not huge on bonus buys because they basically just crank up the volatility. But if you want to actually see a feature, Scatter Hunt is the least painful option.
What to Expect When Playing Aftermath Slot

There were 200 spins that we ran at 1 EUR per spin on both desktop and mobile. The main bonus hit twice, once around spin 47, then again near spin 182. Weirdly, both paid exactly 41.9x the bet.
The base game never felt like a slog. Small cascades came in every 3 to 5 spins, and our longest dry spell before the first bonus was only about 8 to 10 spins.
Most base game wins are small, usually under 1x or up to 3x. Our biggest base game hit was 23.90x, and that one was huge for keeping our balance steady. We walked away with a small profit of 11.45 EUR on our starting 1,000 EUR bankroll.
Win Potential and Volatility
Aftermath caps out at 25,000x the bet, which is a lot for a medium-volatility slot.
This game won't touch the crazy numbers you see in extreme-volatility games, but it holds its own against other grid slots. The slot sits comfortably next to heavy-hitters like Nolimit City's Tanked series.
The RTP is 96.05%, which is solid, just above our 96% benchmark.
With medium volatility, this isn't a game that'll drain your bankroll in 10 minutes. But don't expect monster wins in the base game either.
Mobile Performance
Playing smoothly in both portrait and landscape, the layout stays clean and easy to read even when the grid expands to the full 6x8. On mobile browser, it loaded fast with no stutters or frame drops. The spin and bet buttons were responsive.
How Aftermath Compares - Other Slot Titles
Here's how Aftermath stacks up against two heavyweight slots with similar themes:
| Game | Provider | Volatility | Max Win | Special Features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aftermath | NetEnt | Medium | 25,000x the bet | Scatter Pays, avalanches, expandable grid, multipliers, modifiers, regular and Super free spins and bonus buy. |
| Tanked 3: First Blood 2 | Nolimit City | High | 25,584x the bet | xLoot and xGlitch mechanics, instant coins, expansion with bombs, Tank Boosters, 3 levels of free spins and bonus buy. |
| Nitropolis 5 | Elk Studios | High | 50,000x the bet | Nitro Reels, Boss Battle, NPD Holding Cell, Nitro-Booster, regular and Super free spins and X-iter menu. |
Tanked 3 has a nearly identical max win and the same brand of absurd humour, but its high volatility and complex "x" mechanics can be a lot for new players. Nitropolis 5 doubles the max prize and dials up the intensity, but you need a fat bankroll to survive the long dry spells. NetEnt's game stands out with its more accessible medium volatility and simpler modifiers.
Verdict β Is Aftermath Worth Playing?
Reviewing the game, we liked the goofy post-apocalyptic theme and the reggae soundtrack, alongside the dynamic modifiers that keep the gameplay from going stale.
The main downside is that sometimes you'll sit through a long cascade of modifiers and walk away with basically nothing.
Still, Aftermath has that old-school NetEnt feel from 10 years back, and we think you ought to absolutely give it a spin. If you're into quirky themes and slots with real personality, we don't think you'll regret it.
